LIST OF OLD TIME SAYINGS

This is a list of some old-time sayings I have gathered from old cookbooks. Hope you will enjoy them.

Willingness without action is like a cloud without rain; there may be lots of thunder and lightening but no parched ground is watered.

Too little to save, Too much to dump. That's what makes the housewife plump.

"A smile is a light in the window of the face by which the heart signifies it is at home and waiting. A face that cannot smile is like a bulb that cannot blossom." Henry Ward Beecher

You find yourself refreshed by the presence of cheerful people. Why not make earnest effort to confer that pleasure on others?

"Whatever is set before you eat, asking no questions for conscience sake." 1 Cor. 10:37

Be grateful for your doors of opportunity--and for the friends who oil the hinges.

I set out to find a friend, but couldn't find one; I set out to be a friend, and friends were everywhere.

"We may live without poetry, music and art,
We may live without conscience, and live without heart;
We may live without friend, we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks."

"He may live without books--what is knowledge but grieving?
He may live without hope--what is hope but deceiving?
He may live without love--what is passion but pining?
But where is the man that can live without dining?"
By Owen Meredith

There is no indigestion worse than that of trying to eat your own words.

We do not know how inexpensive the seeds of happiness are or we should scatter them oftener.

Little acts of kindness are stowed away in the heart like bags of lavender in a drawer to sweeten every object around them.

Strive always to be like a good watch--open face, busy hands, pure gold, week regulated, full of good works.

FANNIE FARMER QUIOTE

"Progress in civilization has been accompanied by progress in cookery."

TABLE ETIQUETTE FROM THE 1894 WHITE HOUSE COOKBOOK

I love this bit of etiquette from the 1894 White House Cookbook:

"Drink sparingly while eating. It is far better for the digestion not to drink tea or coffee until the meal is finished. Drink gently, and not pour it down your throat like water turned out of a pitcher."

The 1890s White House Kitchen.

FOUNDATION SUGAR COOKIES

This recipe is from the little 1970 Cookie Cookbooklet I found in my late mother's recipe shoebox.

1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 eggs, well beaten
5 cups sifted flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons milk

Cream shortening, sugar and extract together; add eggs and beat until light and fluffy. Sift dry ingredients together; add alternately with milk to creamed mixture.  Chill thoroughly. Roll out small portions of dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter into rounds or fancy shapes. Place on greased cookie sheet; bake at 375 degrees about 15 min. Makes about 12 doz. 2-in. cookies.

CINNAMON -- Sprinkle a mixture of cinnamon and sugar over tops of unbaked cookies.

COCONUT -- Add 1 cup flaked coconut to dough.

QUANTITIES TO SERVE 100

I found this list in an old church cookbook.  It lists quantities needed for serving 100 people.  I thought it interesting that it stated to serve 50 divide by 2 and to serve 25 divide by 4.  Evidently they didn't think women were very good in math!

  • 3 lbs coffee
  • 3 quarts cream
  • 4 pints whipping cream
  • 6 gallons milk
  • 2 1/2 gallons fruit cocktail
  • 5 gallons soup
  • 25 lbs weiners
  • 40 lbs ham
  • 30-36 lbs hamburger
  • 35 lbs potatoes
  • 5 gallon baked beans
  • 10 loaves bread
  • 3 lbs butter
  • 12 quarts potato salad
  • 18 pies
  • 8 cakes
  • 4 gallons ice cream
  • 3 lbs cheese
  • 2 quarts pickles
  • 3 lbs assorted nuts
