  1. Hey Linda, I hope you are doing well. I too am an Indiana girl. I found your blog by looking for hickory nut recipes. Seeing your persimmon cookie recipe brings back fond memories.

My grandmother was a Sowder from down around Mt Vernon and Renfro Valley, Kentucky way. Do you know much about your Dad's family history and where his Sowder line came from? I now live in Kentucky about 50 miles from my home place in southern Indiana.

I'm enjoying reading all of your postings especially the old time recipes and can't wait to try some of them out. I have gathered a basket of hickory nuts here at our place and our grandson gathered two five gallon buckets of black walnuts from their place back home in Indiana.

    I've got to get cracking
Thanks so much for putting these recipes out to the public. I know a lot of us really appreciate them!

  2. Mrs. C,
Sounds like you and I had similar childhoods. My husband was in the Air Force so I have lived in five states, settling in North Texas. My parents are gone but my only sister still lives in Southern Indiana so I go back at times. I was there last August/September but haven't been back this year. Glad you enjoy the old recipes. I really don't know if my grandfather had Kentucky relatives. I will have to ask around on that one. He was one of 13 children. My dad had uncles who spelled the name Sowder, Sowders, Souder, Souders, and I don't know what else. Good luck on getting all those nuts cracked and picked out! Sounds like you will have some good eating coming up.
